CURRICULUM

We offer our pupils a balanced curriculum which is largely based on the National Curriculum. Emphasis is placed on the traditional ‘3 Rs’ while the children are also given the opportunity to develop in other areas such as art, computers, music and drama.

The National Curriculum states which subjects should be taught in schools and to what standard. Key stages 1 and 2 at age 5 to 11 prescribe the standards expected to be reached. This framework fulfills the need for a simple, easily understood and universal system.

The National Curriculum is compulsory for state schools, but not for independent schools. Nevertheless, the ISEB, which sets the Common Entrance exams for which many of our pupils sit, has revised its syllabus in most subjects to reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum, so we follow it closely in most areas.

All pupils are taught the following subjects: -
Language
Numeracy
Understanding of the World (history, geography and religion)
Science
Physical Education
Drama, music, arts and crafts
I.C.T.
Design and technology
French.

Within these subjects we also aim to: -

• Develop lively, enquiring minds and discuss and share ideas;
• Acquire understanding, knowledge and skills;
• Use language and numbers effectively across a wide range of subjects;
• Develop personal moral values and respect for others;
• Develop responsible attitudes towards themselves and their environment;
• Learn to work co-operatively;
• Value their achievements and aspirations and those of others;
• Find pleasure in learning and experience success;
• Develop creative and aesthetic awareness.

The curriculum will continue to develop and therefore is under constant review.
