CURRICULUM

P.E. Policy

At The Hurlingham we aim to have an Active Policy within the Curriculum, School Environment and our Community.

Within the Curriculum

We aim to:

  • provide a broad, balanced and relevant physical education programme that complies with statutory requirements and is accessible to and meets the needs of all pupils;
  • fully implement in practice National Curriculum requirements for health-related excercise through an effectively planned, delivered and evaluated programme of study;
  • provide pupils with a minimum of 2 hours of physical education each week of the school year;
  • monitor pupils' level of involvement in sport and activity (in and out of school);
  • provide an extra-curricular programme that includes a range of purposeful and enjoyable physical activities (competitive and non-competitive, team and individual, recreational);
  • increase the proportion of pupils who regularly participate in extra-curricular activites;
  • organise events (both in curricular and extra-curricular time) that promote physical activity (e.g. sports day, activity weeks, outdoor education experiences).

Subject Objectives

PE is a foundation subject within the National Curriculum. The aims of PE as set out by the QCA Scheme of Work for PE are:

  • To allow children to become skilful and intelligent performers.
  • To enable children to acquire and develop skills, and to perform with increasing physical competence and confidence in a range of physical activities and contexts.
  • To learn how to select and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas to suit activities that need different approaches and ways of thinking.
  • To develop their ideas in a creative way.
  • To set targets for themselves and compete against others, individually and as team members.
  • To understand what it takes to persevere, succeed and acknowledge others' success.
  • To respond to a variety of challenges in a range of physical contexts and environments.
  • To take the initiative and focus on improving their own performance.
  • Discover their own aptitudes and preferences for different activities.
  • To make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their lives.
  • To develop positive attitudes about participation in physical activity.
