EARLY YEARS
Welcome to Reception at Hurlingham School!
Your child’s introduction to school life is one of the most important moments in his or her life, so choosing the right school is essential.
Hurlingham School provides a safe, caring, lively, creative and motivating environment, based on traditional values as well as a modern outlook, where children thrive and thoroughly enjoy learning. They follow a broad curriculum, with particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy but also a very stimulating learning environment, where all of the six areas of learning are accessed and explored in the afternoons. Our reputation for enabling children to develop and learn and for children of all abilities to be the best that they can be is a result, we believe, of our combination of high expectations and personal development as well as a nurturing and creative learning environment.
Hurlingham School is an independent school for boys and girls of diverse backgrounds, faiths and cultures. The school is housed in a beautiful, secure and modern building, set in its own grounds, with close access to Wandsworth Park. The bright and spacious Reception classrooms have direct access to the brilliant playground and we have a lovely separate reception area which the children come through each morning. It is a cosy and fun space filled with bright and cheerful displays, an interactive white board and a comfy sofa which is used for reading with the children. This area is used throughout the day, either for specialist teachers working with small groups or individual children and is transformed into an exploration area in the afternoons, where the children can choose from a variety of exciting activities or just sit quietly in the quiet reading area. We feel very privileged to have our own little ‘school within a school’.
This website gives you a glimpse into the warm, caring and stimulating environment you will discover at Hurlingham School. We warmly invite you to come and visit us to experience the happy, family atmosphere that we so importantly want to instil in the children and the staff.
What makes Hurlingham School special?
We believe that our combination of high expectations, dedicated staff members and a creative and stimulating purpose-built learning environment makes Hurlingham School a very special place. Our dedicated team of teachers and assistants fosters the intellectual and social development of each child, enabling them all to achieve personal success at their own pace and to the very best of their abilities.
The lively, creative learning environment, together with the broad curriculum, encourages the development of the whole child by:
- placing great importance on reading, phonics, writing and mathematics, as early work on literacy and numeracy lays the foundation for skills and insights used later in life.
- encouraging each child to do their very best by praising their efforts and achievements, and providing an environment in which they can learn to work and gain self-esteem.
- providing small classes, where the teacher can work with the class, small groups or individuals.
- promoting self-discipline and personal qualities such as good manners, polite behaviour and thoughtfulness towards others.
Most importantly we aim to promote a special love for learning at Hurlingham School. We also see education as a partnership between the child, parents and teachers. Parents are always most welcome and love our ‘open door’ policy as well as the many school-based social events that we have.
On joining the school, each child becomes a member of one of the four houses. This encourages the children to mix, as well as promoting good work and behaviour and healthy competition as well as sportsmanship.
We look forward to meeting you!
