Reception (Early Years)

Your child’s introduction to school is one of the most important moments in his or her life, so choosing the right setting is essential.  Reception is part of the Lower School at Hurlingham.  This encompasses Reception, Form I and Form II.

What makes Reception at Hurlingham School special?

We believe that our combination of high expectations, dedicated staff members and a creative and stimulating purpose-built learning environment makes Hurlingham School a very special place.  Our experienced Reception team foster the intellectual and social development of each individual child, enabling the pupils to achieve personal success at their own pace and to the very best of their abilities.

The lively, creative learning environment, together with the broad curriculum, encourages the development of the whole child by:

  • placing importance on reading, writing and mathematics, as early work on literacy and numeracy lays the foundations for all future learning
  • encouraging all children to do their best by praising their efforts and achievements, and providing an environment in which they can learn to work hard and gain self-esteem
  • providing small classes with optimal adult : child ratios, where the teacher can work with the class, small groups or individuals
  • promoting self-discipline and personal qualities such as good manners, polite behaviour and thoughtfulness towards others

Most importantly, at Hurlingham School we aim to promote a love of learning.  Education is a partnership between the child, parents and teachers.  Parents are always welcome and we encourage strong communication links.

On joining the school, each child becomes a member of one of the four houses.  This helps the children to see themselves as part of the whole school, as well as promoting good work and behaviour, and a little healthy competition as well as learning to work as a team.

On entering the Reception area you will see the first year of Lower School is housed in a dedicated learning environment.  The bright and spacious classrooms have direct access to the playground and there is a shared Reception Hall area.  This space is used throughout the day, either for teachers working with small groups or individual children, and for collaborative learning too.
We hope this gives you a positive insight into Hurlingham School’s Reception year.  If you would like to visit Hurlingham School and find out more about us, meet the children, staff and Mr Brough, please make an appointment by contacting the admissions officer.

We look forward to meeting you!
