Hurlingham Nursery School Putney

Welcome to Hurlingham Nursery School

Welcome to Hurlingham Nursery School, a premier independent co-educational nursery in the heart of Putney. Since joining the Hurlingham family in September 2017, our nursery has established itself as one of the leading nursery schools Putney has to offer, providing exceptional early years education for children aged 2-4.

At Hurlingham Nursery Putney, we believe that confidence and happiness are essential ingredients for success. Our nurturing environment creates a space where children can thrive both academically and socially, preparing them for a seamless transition to formal education while establishing a lifelong love of learning.

About Hurlingham Nursery Putney

Hurlingham Nursery School functions as an integral component of the larger Hurlingham School system, serving as the foundation of our educational journey for children aged 2-4 years. Located on Gwendolen Avenue in Putney, our nursery provides a convenient option for families seeking high-quality early years education in South West London, including both the Putney and Barnes communities.

Our educational philosophy centres around creating an exceptionally friendly and supportive setting where children feel secure and valued. We understand that for many children, nursery represents their first experience away from home, which is why we place such emphasis on creating a warm, welcoming environment where every child can flourish.

The Hurlingham approach is built upon four essential pillars:

  • Socialisation – Developing crucial interpersonal skills through collaborative play and group activities
  • Confidence – Building self-assurance through encouragement and positive reinforcement
  • Literacy – Fostering a love of language, stories, and early reading skills
  • Numeracy – Introducing mathematical concepts through engaging, hands-on activities

This balanced approach ensures that children develop not just academically but emotionally and socially, preparing them for the next steps in their educational journey at one of the most respected preschool nursery settings in the area.

Our Enhanced Early Years Curriculum

At Hurlingham Nursery Putney, we implement a comprehensive curriculum that fully encompasses and extends beyond the statutory Early Years’ Foundation Stage requirements. Our enriched educational framework ensures children receive a well-rounded foundation while also benefiting from enhanced learning opportunities that prepare them for the more structured environment they will encounter in primary school.

Our blended learning methodology incorporates:

  • Teacher-initiated activities that introduce new concepts and skills
  • Child-led exploration that fosters creativity and independence
  • Guided play that builds upon children’s natural curiosity

This multi-faceted strategy allows children to develop academic skills while also cultivating creativity, independence, and self-direction. Our curriculum places special emphasis on the world of stories, books, and literature, reflecting our commitment to developing strong literacy foundations from the earliest age.

Daily activities include focused sessions on early phonics, numeracy, and literacy, ensuring consistent progress in these fundamental areas. Unlike many other nurseries in Putney, our teaching is conducted by an Early Years’ team of highly qualified and well-trained practitioners who demonstrate clear dedication to providing children with the best possible educational start.

Exceptional Facilities at Our Day Nursery Putney

The physical environment at Hurlingham Nursery has been thoughtfully designed to support optimal learning and development. Our day nursery Putney facilities are housed in a beautifully light, airy, and spacious setting that provides an inviting atmosphere for young learners.

Our classrooms are intentionally designed to be cosy and welcoming, creating a homelike environment that helps ease children’s transition from home to school. The generously proportioned spaces allow children ample room to move freely and engage meaningfully with peers, supporting physical development and social interaction simultaneously.

Within this carefully crafted physical space, we provide a balanced range of activities and learning opportunities. Our activity selection is curated to offer sufficient variety without overwhelming children, encouraging participation while maintaining a sense of security and comfort.

For our pre-school children, the learning environment extends beyond the classroom to include regular Forest School sessions, providing opportunities for outdoor exploration and nature-based learning. This additional dimension to our curriculum separates us from many other nurseries Barnes and Putney have to offer, providing children with valuable experiences in the natural world.

Admissions to Hurlingham Nursery Putney

The admission process at our nursery in Putney begins with parents completing an Enquiry Form, after which our team arranges a private tour of the facilities. This visit provides prospective families with an opportunity to experience firsthand not only the physical space but also the warm and nurturing environment created by our teaching team.

During this tour, parents learn about the structure of children’s sessions at different stages, the learning pathway, available options, and can have any questions addressed by our knowledgeable staff members.

Following the tour, formal registration is completed through an Online Registration Form accompanied by a non-refundable registration fee of £75. Places at the nursery are offered in order of registration, with priority given to siblings of existing pupils in either the nursery or main school.

Key admission points to note:

  • Offers are generally made up to a year prior to the child’s proposed start date
  • All children must attend a minimum of four sessions per week
  • During the final Pre-School year, this minimum requirement increases to six sessions
  • We recommend working toward full-time attendance by year-end to ensure school readiness
  • Children participating in the Forest School program must attend both morning and afternoon sessions on their allocated Forest School day

After receiving an offer letter, parents must return a completed Acceptance Form accompanied by a non-refundable Acceptance Fee of £2,000 to confirm their child’s place. This fee converts to a deposit on the child’s first day at the nursery and is returned when the child leaves, provided all outstanding fees have been paid and proper notice of withdrawal (one full term) has been given.

Fees and Funding at Our Putney Nursery School

Hurlingham Nursery School operates on a termly fee structure that varies according to the number of weekly sessions a child attends. We participate in government funding schemes which can significantly reduce costs for eligible families:

  • The universal 15-hour government funding is available for all 3 and 4-year-old children
  • When applied, this funding substantially reduces termly fees

Different fee schedules also apply for 2-year-olds who qualify for government funding. Our administrative team is available to guide parents through the funding options and help determine eligibility.

Guaranteed Pathway to Hurlingham Prep School

One of the most significant advantages of choosing Hurlingham Nursery, compared to other nurseries Barnes and Putney offer, is the guaranteed educational pathway we provide. All pupils who complete the pre-school year at our independent nursery school Barnes and Putney pupils attend are guaranteed an offer of a place at Hurlingham Prep School.

This assurance provides families with educational security and eliminates the stress often associated with primary school applications in competitive London areas. For children who begin their educational journey with us, this continuity creates a seamless progression into formal education.

Throughout the nursery experience, and particularly in the pre-school year, our activities are designed to provide children with the essential tools they will need for more formal education. The increased attendance requirements in the final year (minimum six sessions, working toward full-time) specifically aim to prepare children for the full-time schedule they will encounter in Reception class.

Beyond academic preparation, we focus on emotional readiness for school transition. Children become familiar with the main school environment and teaching staff during their time at the nursery, building confidence and comfort with the setting they will later join. This familiarity means children are typically happy and confident when moving up to the main school, as they already understand the environment and have relationships with teachers.
