At Hurlingham School, assessment is ongoing and used to inform planning. Our Assessment Policy is designed to build a complete picture of each child’s strengths and areas for development, while helping them build the skills and confidence needed for future school entrance exams, without unnecessary stress or pressure.
Informal formative assessment is a core element of daily teaching. As children engage in their learning, we continuously observe and evaluate their understanding, skills and knowledge. When a child has grasped a concept, we deepen and extend their learning. If they need more time or support, we adapt our teaching to reinforce and consolidate key skills.
In addition, we use a range of summative assessments and standardised tests at key points to monitor progress and ensure every child is developing at an appropriate pace. These include tools like the CATs (Cognitive Ability Tests) and Progress Tests in English and Maths. Depending on the age of the pupils, many of the tests are now computer-based which helps familiarise pupils with assessment formats similar to those used for senior school entrance exams.
When pupils begin preparing for the 11+ process, we tailor their experience to match the expectations of their target schools, ensuring a smooth and well-supported transition. Pupils are given access to platforms, including ‘Atom’ and ‘BOFA’ which track progress and adapt to suit the needs of each individual pupil.
11+ Preparation and Future Schools
Our formal 11+ preparation begins in Year 5, when pupils start to explore specimen questions from past entrance exams. By Year 6, they are practising full past papers to build familiarity, confidence and exam technique. We aim to ensure that each child is thoroughly prepared and supported as they approach this important milestone.
The process of selecting the right senior school is handled on an individual basis, with close consultation between families and our senior staff, including the Head and Head of 11+. Our goal is to guide each pupil toward a school that fits their unique strengths, aspirations and character.
